The Sport for Life Performance Centre has quickly become Manitoba’s premiere development center for provincial athletes. Over 350 athletes from over 30 provincial sport organizations and teams are using the Performance Centre regularly to develop their skills for upcoming competitions.
The facilities are also being used by several professional and other elite athletes looking for premiere strength and conditioning and physiology training from the qualified Performance Centre coaching staff. Furthermore, the Performance Centre offers its resources to the public and not-for-profit organizations. In doing so, Sport Manitoba helps to introduce fitness, health and wellness to all members of the community, including both athletes and the general public.
We continue to expand our reach across the province. We are actively recruiting highly qualified service provdiers to offer nutrition, sport psychology, biomechanics, and strength and conditioning to our athletes living in rural Manitoba.
The Sport Performance Centre's growth and development has already proven fruitful. At the 2013 Canada Games in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Team Manitoba set a record by winning 35 medals, the most ever won by our province. This resulted in Team Manitoba winning the Centennial Cup as the most improved province.
Sport Manitoba takes pride in its connection to the community. This past year we've continued successful partnerships with the Boys and Girls Club of Winnipeg, Winnipeg Aboriginal Sport Achievement Centre (WASAC), Salvation Army, and Aboriginal Community Campus.
The Sport for Life Performance Centre continues to have great success offering fieldwork placements and volunteer opportunities for students from the University of Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba to gain practical experience in the field of Kinesiology. We're recently hosted several elementary and high-school field trips, during which the students learn about the importance of exercise, gym safety and basic exercise techniques.
With several new and exciting initiatives on the horizon, the Sport Performance Centre will continue to strengthen its connection to the commnuity in the coming year.
